Russell Smith's Website [2002/01/05]
Links
One of the main ideas of the Web is to allow pages to link to each other. So to carry on the tradition, and to help you to make the most of your time online, here's a few of my favorite sites.
Programs
WinAmp
http://www.winamp.com
I know that there's other audio players out there, but FreeAmp's got too many little bugs, that get on your nerves, so when in Windoze, WinAmp is the only sensible choice.
XMMS
http://www.xmms.org
Even under Linux, FreeAmp's bugs are just too anoying, so XMMS is the best digital audio player at the moment.
Vorbis
http://www.vorbis.org
MP3 might be popular, but it's creation entails the use of maths owned by people, so you have to pay to distribute MP3's and anything that can create MP3's.
Only one word describes that,
EVIL. So Vorbis is a free Open-Source version, it's actually slightly better quality then MP3 and has smaller files. It's still in development at the moment, but keep an eye on it.
Blender
http://www.blender.nl
If you've ever mentioned 3D graphics to me, then you've probably heard of Blender. If you haven't then Blender is a free 3D graphics program for Windoze/ Linux/ FreeBSD/ Any machine you can think of.
I use it to do most of my pictures in the gallery section.
The GIMP
http://www.gimp.org
Want Photoshop for free? That's basically The GIMP. Most Linux disks come with it on it, and after using it you soon see why. Oh, and it's Open-Source. There's even a Windoze version available.
POV-Ray
http://www.povray.org
The ultimate in 3D graphics. No editor, just text files, but a
very powerful ray-tracer, and it's Open-Source too.
Projects
Jabber
http://www.jabber.org
Commercial Site: http://www.jabber.com
A completely open Instant messaging and presence service. Just like ICQ, AIM, MSN Messenger, and compatable with all of them, as long as they haven't been nastly and invented some way of stopping other clients from accessing their system. (AOL, Boo hiss!)
